Henriette Derman, a Russian immigrant, completed her studies at the Simmons  library school  in 1917. Upon returning to her homeland of Latvia, Mrs. Derman helped modernize the Russian library system. Due to her anti-revolutionary activities, she was sent into exile and was unable to continue her library work.
