About this Display

September 15 to October 15 is National Hispanic Heritage Month. Observed nationally since 1968 and sponsored by several national organizations, including the Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, and  Smithsonian Institution, this holiday celebrates the history and contributions of generations of Hispanic Americans.

September 15 was chosen as the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month because it is the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates independence on September 16, and Chile on September 18. For more information on the history of this celebration, see the Library of Congress official website for National Hispanic Heritage Month.
