Funding your PhD

In addition to the funding opportunities listed below, many PhD programs in English offer funding for graduate students. Once you've identified graduate programs that might be of interest, check their websites to find out about the funding opportunities available for that program.

Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship
For 12 months of full-time dissertation research and writing on ethical or religious values.
Columbia University Fellowship Database
The database primarily contains available fellowships and grants from non-Columbia sources. However, some external grant programs administered by Columbia are included as well as guidelines for applying.
Cornell University Fellowship Database
Includes a fellowship database and as well as "A Guide To External Graduate Fellowships," which is a PDF available for download.
Fellowship Resources on the Web
From UC Berkeley, a comprehensive list of fellowship resources available on the web including a section on resources for underrepresented groups.
Ford Foundation
The Ford Foundation aims to support visionary leaders and organizations on the front lines of social change. The site hosts a grant database with 1900 grants to consider.
Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program
Up to four years of support for graduate study at the doctoral or Master of Fine Arts level in selected fields of the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Limited to U.S. citizens and permanent residents.
University of Maryland Fellowships Database
University of MD-funded fellowships, and links to other databases to find fellowships.
Winterthur Dissertation Fellowships
One or two semesters for doctoral candidates conducting dissertation research and writing. Stipend: $7,000 per semester. Application deadline: January 15th.
Yale University Fellowship Database
This database centralizes Yale-funded and Yale-administered grants, fellowships, and internships into a searchable and dynamic web-based interface.

American Association of University Women
Dissertation and career development grants for women in graduate programs who have achieved distinction or show the promise of distinction in their fields. Deadlines vary; applications can be requested online.

MassCIS Financial Aid
The Massachusetts Career Information System (MassCIS) is available to Massachusetts residents. Once in the site, click on 'Financial Aid'. Note: a username and password are not necessary to enter the site. Click on 'Adult' to get to the login page. Then simply fill out the bottom half of the login page with a town, zip code, and type of user.
Peterson's Online Resources
Peterson's is not only provides a searchable database of graduate programs but also includes information on scholarships and financial aid for both undergraduates and graduate students.

The GRAPES database catalogs extramural funding opportunities of interest to prospective and current graduate students, students working on a master's thesis or doctoral dissertation, and postdoctoral scholars. It contains information on over 500 private and publicly funded awards, fellowships, and internships.
