NURP 410: Research Methods: How to Get Articles & Books that Simmons Doesn't Have

This course guide is designed to support the 2SN students in NURS 410 and covers Library resources and tools, effective search strategies and examples of scholarly research formats.

What's on this page?

On this page you'll find information that will help you to get materials, including books and articles, that aren't in the Simmons Library collection. Included here are tips for borrowing materials through Interlibrary Loan as well as locating books in libraries near you.

What is Interlibrary Loan and how do I use it?

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service provided by the Simmons Library that will help you to get books and articles that the library doesn't have in its collection.  In this case, the library will go out and borrow a copy of an item for you and then deliver it to you directly. Articles will be posted in the interlibrary loan portal where you can download them, save them, or work with them in any way that you want. Books will be mailed directly to you.

How do I get articles that Simmons doesn't have?

How to request: Place a request using the Interlibrary Loan system. (Remember to log in with the same user name and password that you use for Simmons email!) Use the "Article" request form and fill in as much citation information as possible. You can also use the green "Find Full Text" button found in Simmons databases.

How it is delivered: You will be notified via email when the article is ready to access electronically as a PDF through your ILL account.

How do I get books that Simmons doesn't have?

How to request: Place a request using the Interlibrary Loan system, just as you would for an article. Click Book under Submit New Request and fill in as much information as you can about the book on the next page.

How it is delivered: The item will be mailed to you at your home. Once you are logged into the Interlibrary Loan system, please make sure that we have your current address by clicking on "Update Contact Info" in the menu on the left side of the screen.

How do I find books in a library near me?

WorldCat will tell you whether the book you want is in a local library or if you'll need to request it through Interlibrary Loan.  Type the title of the book you want into the search box on WorldCat's home page (or in the search widget below). On the next page, click the book's title. Then scroll down the page to see the libraries closest to your zip code that have it.  The closest libraries that have the book will be listed first.

You can search WorldCat here, too!

Search WorldCat to locate a book in other local libraries or in libraries around the world.
