Research process overview for students in IT 101

Session Objectives

This session will describe library resources and search techniques you can use to complete your first research paper for IT 101. By the end of this session you will know how to:

  • Find resources using the Library's web and hard-copy resources.
  • Use online databases to search for scholarly resources.
  • Access resources not owned by Beatley via Interlibrary Loan and local libraries.
  • Evaluate sources.
  • Find resources that provide citation style details.
  • Get research help from librarians and the writing center.

Assignment Description

Write report on a major figure (or organization) in the early days of the Internet (think any time from the 1960s through the 1990s). You should focus your paper on the person/organization’s contribution to the development of the Internet as we know it today. If exploring a related piece of technology is important for understanding, you should include that as well.

Your paper should be 3 to 4 pages long, double-spaced and size-12 font. This “page count” does not include a title sheet should you wish to include one, or a bibliography.

A bibliography is required. You may use any citation method (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc), but you must cite sources. You may use Wikipedia to get your bearings on a topic or technology, but you should not use it as a source to write your paper. Please use at least 3 different sources, one of which should be a non-electronic resource.
