NURP 411: Scholarly Inquiry: Test & Measure

Nursing 411 Scholarly inquiry

"How do you cite a test or measure?"

Finding Tests & Measures

In these pages you'll find several different kinds of examples of ways and places to search for instruments - the examples include the short written process, screenshots, and an overview of the process. Remember, there's no one perfect way to search, but these are some strategies that work well when searching for instruments. Also, you'll probably have to closely read the methods section of an article to get a full understanding of the instrument.

Finding Tests in Journal Articles

Sometimes authors of a journal article will describe a scale, test, or measure that they either used or created for their research. The authors will occasionally include the scale in the appendix of their article. Adding the word append* will help you find articles that have an appended test. The * tells the database to look for append, appended, or appendix.

Finding Full-Text of Tests and Measures in Articles

As you look through the abstracts of the articles, look for keywords like "Appended" as highlighted below. This means that you will find the full-text of the instrument in the appendix of the article.

  • Start with a topic search in PsycINFO or CINAHL. Select the Tests & Measures or Instrumentation field (depending on the database).
  • Choose a relevant article.
  • Scroll down to the the Tests & Measures or Instrumentation Section. Choose an instrument that was used in the study.
  • Does the full-text article include the instrument in the methods or an appendix?
  • If not, try searching for the instrument by name in PsycTESTS.
  • If you’re not seeing any results, try a search in Mental Measurements Yearbook and Google to check if it’s a published test.
  • You may find a PDF of the full-text or a sample of the test.
  • Or, you might find the original citation in the Test Record Section, Use Find a Journal or Google Scholar to locate it.
