Making Scanned Documents Accessible

  1. Use OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to scan a document as text and not an image
  2. Remediate PDF to make it accessible

OCR

Use OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to scan your document as searchable text and not an image. Adobe Acrobat has built-in OCR software you can use to convert scans. Go to 'Tools' > 'Create and Edit' > 'Scan & OCR'.

Make the PDF Accessible

Use the 'Make Accessible' option in the Action Wizard tool in Adobe Acrobat to begin to make your scanned document accessible to screen readers. In Adobe Acrobat, go to 'Tools' > 'Customize' > 'Action Wizard' > 'Make Accessible'. Follow steps from Adobe Help

See more about how to remediate PDFs in Adobe Acrobat.
