Chicago Style (17th Edition) Citation Guide: Magazine/Newspaper Articles

A citation guide for Chicago Style 17th Edition. Includes Author-Date style and Notes & Bibliography style.

Important Notes

1. Cite a newspaper article as you would a magazine article. If the newspaper title starts with The, omit The from the title in your citation.

2. Since newspapers may have multiple editions, page numbers are usually omitted for newspaper articles.

3. If the newspaper is a less well-known or local publication, include the city name and state abbreviation in parentheses after the title of the newspaper.

4.  For Author-Date Style, Magazines/Newspapers are often cited only within the text of the paper. A corresponding Reference List entry is not needed as long as the item has been documented in the text.
